Industry Standards

Perfume industry has thousands of ingredients which can be used during the manufacture process, but all the components can be split into natural or synthetic categories. Regardless of the category, some ingredients can cause an allergy reaction including, but not limited to, mild to severe headache, red eyes, skin irritation, rashes, etc.

Special independent organisation - The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) - was founded in 1973 to both represent the interests of the industry and promote safety in fragrance products around the world. IFRA has produced Code of Practice and IFRA Standards, which are constantly improved and updated, to achieve its goals.

IFRA has created a list of chemical components with safety rules that apply to them. A particular component can be put into one of the following categories:

  • Prohibited: the component is not allowed in the perfume product.
  • Restricted: the component can be used but in extremely modest concentration.
  • Specification: the component can be used if it meats particular criteria.
