Citrus Materials
Would you like a riddle? What sounds bitter but gives you joy? Of course, it is Citrus Materials!
A surprise but a welcome one
Citrus Family is essentially a group of the most fresh and sparky notes, that can lift up any composition.
You may be wondering why there is a separate Citrus Family, when citruses are fruits and should belong to Fruity Family?
The answer is rather simple – Citrus Materials are special.
They are special for having a very distinct character and recognisable clean tangy scents.
They are also special for being the most allergic ones, and thus are highly restricted in perfumery.
Energising and optimistic, dangerous and unsafe – the forbidden fruit is always the sweetest :)
Is It A Game Over?
Despite causing allergies, citrus is widely used in the perfume industry.
Luckily, there is an independent organisation called IFRA (International Fragrance Association) that does comprehensive research on chemical materials and develops thorough guidelines on how to use components in perfumery.
Maybe it would be safer to use a synthetic component with similar properties, but the production of citrus oils is not very expensive, this is why safe synthetic substitutes mostly have not been developed.
Popular Materials
Most citrus materials are extracted from the zest of the fruits. Among the most popular ones are:
1. Bergamot
