Earthy Materials
We are going on an adventure today. Let's get closer to the ground and do some digging on one of the most surprising groups of notes in perfumery. We are talking about Earthy materials.
Close to Nature
Earthy Family, also known as Earthy-Mossy Family, is intended to bring calm, relaxing emotions that you can experience in Nature.
Just imagine...
You are walking through the wood. The rain has just ended, and the everlasting smell of fresh air is surrounding you.
It is all silent.
It may feel like the time has stopped, but occasional crunch of twigs and scattered leaves wake you up from your stasis.
The trees are accompanying you, watching your every step as you go deeper and deeper. As you run your hand across one of the trees, you feel its bark. It sharp and bumpy, the moss is cold and wet...
The above episode perfectly describes the aromas you can come across working with Earthy materials. Some of the most notable accords among them: smell of the disturbed soil, wet moss, freshly dug roots, and after-rain air.
Purpose
Earthy Materials are mainly used to complement your blend, make it smoother, add some natural accord to it.
Therefore, most of them are used in tiny amounts, pretty much traces. First of all, it is already enough to make an impact. Secondly, we aim to enhance your perfume, not to make you smell like a Bigfoot.
At the same time, there are exceptions to the rule. For example, Vetiver and Patchouli are used in decent amounts and can form a base for your blend.
Usage in your own perfume
You can choose Earthy Materials when you create your blend on our design page.
We don't show all the materials we have, only the ones that can create a sufficient base for your blend.
However, if you want your perfume to have extra Earthy properties, just let us know in the comment section.
Popular Material
If you want to use Earthy Materials with minimal risk, then the following options are the most suitable ones
1. Vetiver
Vetiver has damp earthy-woody aroma reminiscent of a sack of potatoes. A great fixative, blends extremely well with any woody material, spices, herbs, flowers and citruses.
2. Patchouli
Patchouli has a deep, dark and earthy aroma with a hint of sweet and spicy accents. In combination with Ethyl Maltol (candy floss molecule) patchouli makes a classic ‘Gourmand Accord’ – the base of most gourmand fragrances.
3. Oakmoss
Oakmoss has a strong earthy-mossy aroma of wet forest floor. Along with bergamot and labdanum, oakmoss is an essential element of any 'Chipre' perfume. If you blend it with Calone (ocean smelling molecule), you’ll get a 'Seashore accord'.
4. Petrichor
Petrichor is what you smell after the rain. If you want to recreate the smell of a wet soil after spring showers use Geosmin (petrichor molecule).
